From the 25th-26th July Spectrum Club did a 24 Hour gaming marathon where we would stay and just play games for 24 hours. It was quite the gruelling task to say up for so long, but it was also loads fun as there were many different games being played at the same time and people interacting with one another. A few of us here are now going to give a little retrospective of what we did at the game-a-thon.

When I heard of a 24 Hour game-a-thon I thought I’d do something special for the occasion. So I was brave enough to set myself a task that none others would dare to do. Play Sonic 06 in full. Oh yeah. To be honest I had no idea how long it would take me to do it. I thought I might not even be able to beat it within 24 hours and I even contemplated using glitch abuse to speed it up. To my surprise however it all went very smoothly. I ran into minimal glitches, got a lot of S ranks and even beat Silver’s ball puzzle on my first go. Shocking isn’t it? I got the game beat in under 10 hours. Playing it back I won’t defend the game as being good because objectively it isn’t, but in terms of enjoyment factor I can’t deny having a good time with it. I guess you could say that game is my guilty pleasure. Because I had so much time left I was able to join James for some tournaments like a Super Smash Bros Melee tournament and some races on Mario Kart Double Dash. I lost to James at Melee but I kicked ass on Mario Kart. After that I was generally just watching others and playing music games to perk myself up. A mandatory Guitar Hero session was a must as me Jordan and Thompson made a neat little three-piece with me on guitar, Jordan on vocals and Thompson on drums, and we only got booed off about a couple of times. I also was really getting into Just Dance. Those games make you look extremely silly but it’s good as a party activity and it can be good exercise. By the time it was all over I was struggling to keep awake, I was really sweaty and I felt all gamed out, but it was worth it and I had a really fun time.

David

Hello, David here. For my challenge in the 24 hour game-a-thon I decided to play through as much of the ratchet and clank series as I could. The first one was not as hard as I remember but it took a good 8 hours just to speed run it. When I moved on to number 2 however I remember this was where they made most of the changes (such as weapon levels and extended health) but upon completing ratchet and clank 2 I realized what I had gotten myself into. Honestly I got tired and stopped after that but I have completed the third one recently and I can say the third one is my favorite. Word of advice if you plan on doing your own marathon BRING FANS as with over 5 consoles on at the same time by the time we got to midnight it was like I was in a desert. Do be sure to mix up what games you play as this can really spice things up.

James

Greetings mortals, I am DracoJames102 and I did the 24-hour gamathon. For my section of the gamathon, I decided to go back and play some nostalgic Nintendo games on my Nintendo Wii. I played games from the N.E.S to the Nintendo Gamecube. The first three games I played (Super Mario Bros., Castlevania and Mega Man X) took me one hour to beat for each of them. I then decided to move on and play some games that would take longer to beat. I beat the first half of The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past, but I never finished it. I was close to finishing Star Fox Assault but I quit because the game was giving me so much trouble. I played more games that didn’t take so long to beat such as Mega Man X2, a ten minute speed run of Super Mario World and a 100% speed run of Super Metroid. In between those games, I hosted a bunch of multi-player tournaments such as Super Smash Bros. Melee and Mario Kart Double Dash. Cameron also suggested that we do a fifty turn game of Mario Party 4 (never again). I did take breaks and play some twister with the guys occasionally. I did feel tired by the end of it but I am surprised that I managed to stay awake throughout the whole thing and I am even more surprised that I kept my sanity.

Cameron

Hello all! For the 24 Hour Game-A-Thon, I decided to focus on my original idea of Sony games, by playing a selection of Games on my Playstation 4. Throughout the day, I casually played a selection of PS4 games such as ‘Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag’, ‘InFamous Second Son’, ‘Wolfenstein: The New Order’, ‘Watch_Dogs’, ‘Killzone Shadow Fall’ and ‘Resogun’. Also, I played a few Gamecube Games With James, Tom, Jess & Liam Including ‘Super Smash Bros. Melee’, ‘Mario Kart Double Dash’ and a 50 turn game of ‘Mario Party 4’ (AKA “Hell”). Even at one point, I played a round or two of Twister, which shall never be mentioned. Overall, besides being very tired by the end of it, the marathon was very entertaining throughout.

So despite wearing us down and how hard it was for us all to stay up the 24-Hour Game-A-Thon was a success and we raised more than out £1000 goal. Whilst it was satisfying to stay up a full 24 hours the worst part of this is always the aftermath. So if you plan on doing something like this in the future the best way to stay up is keep yourself occupied, keep yourself active, keep yourself fed and just keep your sanity. Next up Euro Gamer.
